CPA Waco AlternativeThe city piece and the county piece
Sales tax inside the city is not one number. This page splits the cap into the pieces a book has to keep. Owners in Waco often skip that split.

Split the tax row
A customer standing inside the city limit can be charged 8.25 percent, and that percent belongs to three governments at once. That cap is the state 6.25, plus 1.5 for the city, plus 0.5 for the county. The half percent county piece has been in place for a long time. It is easy to forget because it is small, and small is how it disappears into a deposit.
Cross the city limit and the local sales tax row can change, even when the customer did not notice. The books have to say which row, and we keep that split on the close we share by video.
We record the city piece and the county piece as themselves when the deposit is yours to explain. A card batch that mixes them is reconciled, not shrugged at. The twentieth is the day the return wants them separated.
If the county piece was collected and never named, the month can still tie to the bank and still be wrong for the filing. The bank only knows the dollars arrived. The filing wants to know whose tax they were.
The same is true of a room. Hotel tax is not sales tax. A weekend of rooms that gets dumped into the sales line will make both filings look off, and the close will look finished. We would rather have an ugly open item than a pretty wrong total.
Food service and a plant can share a county and not share a customer. Their deposits should not be asked to prove each other's tax. That is the same instinct as keeping their wages apart. One file, separate lines, a month you can explain out loud.
We look at where the sale happened, what was sold, and whether a local piece was included in the price or added at the register. Then we compare that to what was paid over on the twentieth. A gap is a named item, not a plug.
Bring the doubt when a sale might have crossed the city limit. A guess is the defect we will not paper over. A map check is ordinary work. It is not a research project we bill as mystery.
Card deposits arrive as one lump. The lump can hold a city sale, a sale just outside the limit, and a room. The bank is happy. The twentieth is not, because the return wants the pieces named. We split the lump before we call the month finished, and we leave a named gap when the batch will not explain itself.
That split is the same habit as the wages. One file, separate lines, a month you can say out loud to someone who was not in the shop that week.
A Saturday can ring up food, a shirt, and a ticket in one batch. Those three do not share a local row just because they shared a card reader. We name each one before the twentieth, or we leave the batch open until they do. The batch does not get a free pass because the day was busy.
